Wakanda Elementary is a learning community of 300 students and 35 staff members whose mission is: "Wakanda staff will effectively respond to ALL individual student needs and guide students to become caring, responsible, lifelong learners".  Located on the north side of Menomonie, next to the Wakanda Water Park, the school was established in 1997.  Wakanda has always been a "family friendly" school with an active PTO and staff members who embrace the idea of "our" students.  The school facility is spacious and is divided into pods with small group work space for grade levels 2-5 and a beautiful well stocked library.

As a school that has embraced the Responsive Classroom philosophy, the staff and students practice C.A.R.E.S. (Cooperation, Assertion, Respect, Empathy and Self-Control).  Students are taught that to live and learn as a comminity, these characteristics must be practiced regularly.  Wakanda student achievement is at or above the state average in all academic areas.  The staff members have formed a Professional Learning Community and regularly collaborate to examince student data and develop interventions for students who need additional learning time.  The Wakanda staff includes specialists in the areas of special education, English language learners and Title I who work as a team with the classroom teachers to help ALL students to learn.  In addition, the art, music and physical education specialists are an integral part of the well rounded education students participate in at Wakanda.

Wakanda Elementary has an open door policy and welcomes you to come visit and join us for a short time.  You'll be impressed with the excellent learning enviroment the staff and students have created at Wakanda.

NEWS AND NOTES

As I think about the approaching holiday season and our break from school I look forward to relaxing and enjoying time with family and I hope you are able to do the same.  I also hope you are able to take some time to read with your children and maintain those skills that we have established this year.  It will be important to spend some time EACH day reading, writing or working with words so your child will not have to work twice as hard in January to reestablish their skills.  Speaking of January......I will be gone from school for most of the month of January.  I
