A NOTE FROM THE WAKANDA PRINCIPAL, MRS. ESTREM-FULLER

These grey, dreary, soggy days are good days to be inside and working in school.  The students even like inside recess unless we have it too much!  The playground (as I'm sure you know) is very wet with lots of huge water puddles that children love!  If you haven't already, you may want to put some extra socks in your child's backpack for those days when the puddles are irresistible.  Our students are working hard these days and when we stop to look at data we can see huge growth in many students from the Fall until now.  There seem to be only two things that prevent growth in our students.  The first is when a student is habitually absent or tardy from school.  While we understand illness and emergencies it's hard to get the information you need when you're not in school or come late to school.  Please be aware of this as the days get nicer this Spring.....your child needs to be in school and on time to get the most out of their learning.  The second thing that prevents student growth in learning is the lack of practice at home.  Please be aware of this over Spring Break and take some time to go to the library and/or read a book every day.  When children see adults reading they want to read too.  Also, take the life situations you encounter and make them learning situations.  For instance, let your child count out the money you owe when you go to a store or calculate your savings when you use a coupon at the store.  Any time you can, please reinforce the skills of time and money (especially in grades K-3) as you go about your day.  Also, during Spring Break take some time to have fun as a family!  Many children tell me they are going to visit relatives over Spring Break.  I tell them to ask their relatives for a story about the past.  Enjoy the break!

SUMMER SCHOOL

The brochures for summer school should be available by April 1st.  This year you can complete the registration and turn it into the Wakanda office.  There will not be any fees for summer school this year!  The deadline to register will be April 23rd.  There are many great programs for summer school...from swimming, fishing, biking to reading and math classes....there is something for everyone!  Session I will be June 21-24, June 28-July 1 and July 12-15.  Session II will be July 19-22, July 26-29 and August 2-5.  Summer school is a great time to keep your child practicing reading and math during the summer.  Please consider it!

IN-COMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

Friday, April 16th will be KINDERGARTEN VISIT DAY" for our incoming kindergarten students.  This years kindergarten classes will not have school that day.  If you know of a child  who is not in the district 4 year old kindergarten program, please have them contact our office.  We will have 90 minute visit sessions that day that they will need to sign up for in the office.  This is always an exciting day for our new kindergarten students!!
