A NOTE FROM THE WAKANDA PRINCIPAL, MRS. ESTREM-FULLER

The fall is such a busy time in schools.  In the first six weeks, we work hard to establish our routines, expectations and share our hopes and dreams.  We also assess each child's skill level in reading and math and determine their strengths and weaknesses.  Our mission statement is "The Wakanda learning community of students, parents and teachers will collectively take responsibility for student learning goals.  Together we will take responsibility for all students to learn."  The Partnership Pledge that students, parents and teachers signed at orientation day reflects this attitude and asks each person to take action with some goals.  At Parent-Teacher conferences parents and student will be asked to evaluate how they are doing on their partnership pledge goals.  The teachers have been talking about how all students can learn and finding ways to support each student.  To prepare for conferences take a look at the partnership pledge and think about how you are doing helping your child learn in school.

Responsibility is the "R" letter in C.A.R.E.S.  Children need many opportunities to practice being responsible.  School is a good place for children to take responsibility not only for their work but for their actions.  We start with small amounts of responsibility and then gradually add more responsibility as students are successful.  One of the responsibilities Wakanda students have is to be a buddy to another (often younger) student in the school.  Buddies do activities together for special holidays, help each other to the bus, write together, read together and a host of other activities in school.  One of my favorite moments at Wakanda is when a younger student whispers to me "that's my buddy"!  Connecting students and giving them responsibility is what makes Wakanda a community.

MAKE SCHOOL A PRIORITY

We realize that appointments need to be made for the doctor, dentist and etc.  Please make school a priority when making appointments and try to work with before and after school times as much as possible.  We'd like to give your child as much learning time as possible.

DROP OFF/PICK UP PLAN

Stop at the table by the office during Parent-Teacher Conferences, take a look at our new student drop-off/pick-up plan and pick up your Family Display Card.  This plan will be implemented following conferences.  We'd like to make a smooth transition to a plan that should make our parking lot a safer situation for our students.
